His background in neurophysiology, including hands-on research in Muscular Dystrophy, shapes every project decision, from the precise placement of a grab bar to the turning radius of a wheelchair-accessible kitchen.
A Career Built on Science and Purpose
From Neurophysiology Lab to Universal Design Leader
David founded T-Square Company in 1974, and over the past 50 years he has guided the firm through a deliberate evolution. What began as broad commercial and residential construction, including shopping centers, office buildings and hotels, shifted in the 1980s as the Americans with Disabilities Act brought national attention to accessibility. David recognized that ADA standards, written for commercial and government spaces, were never designed for the nuances of private residential life. That realization set the course for everything that followed.Today, David operates at the intersection of medical science and construction as a certified age in place designer and universal design specialist serving Austin and surrounding Central Texas communities, including Dripping Springs, Driftwood, and Wimberley. He holds the Certified Age-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) credential, is a founding member of the National Age in Place Council (NAIPC) and its Greater Austin chapter, and is the award-winning author of Age in Place at Home, which stands as a substantial guide for people planning to age in place. He is currently contributing a chapter to a new professional book focused on high-tech advances in the field, including AI-assisted gait detection and telehealth integration. David describes this work as a calling. His "Ability-First" philosophy reframes the conversation away from age and toward individual capability, recognizing that mobility challenges affect people of every age, from children with pediatric disabilities to veterans recovering from service injuries to adults managing ALS or MS. For David, the home is not just a structure; it is the environment where independence is either supported or lost.
