Most homes in the Austin area were not designed for long-term accessibility. Ninety percent of the existing homes in the area were built for young, fully functional adults without disabilities. These same homes that fulfilled a need on the day of purchase eventually morph into a house that no longer fits the homeowner's needs. These additional needs have brought about the Aging in Place market. Typical layouts often include:
-
Sunken living rooms
-
Narrow hallways
-
Step-down showers or tubs
-
Uneven exterior entries
-
Dim stairways and hallways
-
High kitchen cabinetry
-
Split-level transitions
The good news is that many Austin homes adapt extremely well to aging in place remodeling when approached in phases.
