Certified Aging In Place Specialist

Housing should be built or remodeled in accordance to the way we live life in the 21st century. Through the years, clients have asked me, “What is the best way to make their homes grow and change with them?” They want their home to be beautiful yet flexible and functional as their needs change. As building professionals, we should all recognize the fact that homes need to be adaptable to accommodate aging, provide accessibility to disabled children, accommodating to different household situations in multi-generational settings, and accepting of the importance of working from home offices in our changing world. We must all evolve to collectively conquer present home demands. Different demands are being placed on homes daily. We will hear these current pleas for flexible housing from now on as a sign of the times. People are becoming increasingly aware of the need for accessible housing to better accommodate a desire to Age in Place. They are looking for professional guidance. Aging in Place issues are now the norm in the remodeling industry given the emergence of the aging baby boomer population. Solving Aging in Place issues and accessible home remodeling during elder construction projects is becoming the number one remodeling challenge in the country. In my humble opinion after participating in accessibility remodels for some 27 years, all professionals dealing with Aging in Place issues should be CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialist) certified regardless of their occupation. The CAPS program was developed in 2001 in several cities across America. It was founded by the National Association of Home Builders, the NAHB, in cooperation with AARP. Certified graduates of the CAPS program, of which I am proudly one, are taught the use of compassionate approaches to help their clients achieve their goals of increased accessibility. Technical business management and customer service skills are also an important part of the program. There is a vast difference between ADA compatibility and Aging in Place issues. ADA compatibility generally involves specialized designs for extreme disabilities but that doesn't mean accessibility isn't a part of Aging in Place. This constitutes why the Aging in Place market is a specialty among the issues within the building environment. The specialty market is not age related but is a function of life experience. It touches all lives as needed. Continuing education courses for Aging in Place professionals include courses in Universal Design and the importance it has in the housing marketplace. Graduates of the program understand why adaptability in home design is so important to accommodate all occupants regardless of size, shape, or mobility in all phases of life. They understand Universal Design is better design representing a seamless pathway for Aging in Place. Universal Design helps people age in their present home without the need for future home modifications. The home is safe and livable for all stages of life.

Our wheelchair accessible showers are fully adaptable. They are built with safety in mind using the principles of Universal Design but cater to your specific needs like reach limits, dexterity, or mobility issues for the final design. They offer roll-in capability, non-slip floors, adequately anchored grab bars installed on wood blocking, handheld shower heads on sliding masts, a regular fixed shower head, shower controls within the reach capability of the user or caretaker, folding seats or benches whichever is most appropriate, and recessed shampoo niches for keeping dangerous clutter off the floor. The shower finish either has a frameless enclosure or a securely mounted shower curtain.

More often than not in Austin, a certain entrance must be designated as the main entrance into the home for a person with mobility issues. Using Universal Design, this chosen entrance offers less of an architectural barrier than that of the others and can be altered to blend in with the home's surroundings. The less conspicuous the better so as not to call attention to the individual for whom the home modifications were done for.

Along with aging in place, universal design is becoming more of a household term. Essentially, it’s about building or modifying places and spaces—both public and private—to accommodate people of all ages and abilities. More than just an architectural concept, universal design is a win-win for sandwich generation boomers caring for aging parents and their children at home, for grandparents raising grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and for all who are facing the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other chronic diseases. Whether your family needs the support now or down the road, universal design features are a good long-term investment for the home itself.
